HEART of TRANSIT supports Rural Transit in Central Iowa
Heart of Transit was established as a non-profit entity to enhance rural transportation services within central Iowa, especially to those with special needs who depend on public transit as their life-line to their community. Heart of Transit will grant seek for funding, and use those funds to help central Iowa transportation providers create new programs, fund unique transportation services and implement on-going transportation options in central Iowa. Door to Door transportation providers are much more than the buses they operate. They have a level of care and concern for those who use the services, and rural systems create a safe standard of transportation, which is reliable, affordable, and allows people to be mobile, keep their freedom and independence, and maintain a higher quality of life for a longer period of time.
Heart of Transit needs to ensure this type of transit service is sustained and enhanced as we move into the next phase of serving Baby Boomers and beyond.
We strongly believe that those in our smaller and more rural communities need access to public transit, as much as, or more, than their counterparts who live in the metro areas. Public Transit not only allows people the freedom to get around their community, we also offer a safety net and a piece of socialization for many who live alone or do not have a support system. Rural transit drivers know and care about each individual who rides, and if they notice something concerning, they tell staff and that is followed up to ensure the person gets additional services they need. There have been several times are drivers have gotten medical attention to people while picking them up, therefore saving their lives.
