MISSION STATEMENT

The Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency provides public transit service available to all citizens and visitors of Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story, and Warren Counties in central Iowa, enhancing quality of life, enabling access to employment and education, and promoting independent lifestyles for central Iowa residents.

ORGANIZATION

The Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (HIRTA) is organized under an Iowa Chapter 28E Agreement to serve as the public transit service provider for the Iowa Department of Transportation's Region 11 covering the seven central Iowa counties of Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story, and Warren.  The HIRTA's Board of Directors is comprised of one county supervisor from each of HIRTA's seven counties.  The HIRTA's staff includes an Executive Director and an Administrative Assistant.  Public transit services are provided by contractors in each county.

SERVICES

HIRTA public transit service is available to anyone in the seven county region, including persons with disabilities as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Nearly 100-percent of the HIRTA vehicle fleet is ADA-accessible.  

Rides are provided on a demand-response basis, with trips scheduled 24 hours in advance and door-to-door service.  To schedule a ride, please click your respective county's tab at the right side of this page.

Minimum service hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the exception of the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, and two days at Christmas.  Additional service days and hours may be available in each county.
